During my immersion visit to Anantapur I came across a small number of MCP beneficiaries. All the women had used their loans for IGA purposes such as buying an autorikshaw or a marble polishing machine. Nonetheless all the ten-fifteen activities described by the women were performed by male members of the family. Although under the danger of fallaciously generalising this incident in a nondescript village, I feel that the MCPs are treating the women as a ‘via-media’ to reach the males, the income generators of a family.
It might be quite true that such means can also take us to the end of reduction in poverty. However paving foundation for equity in the family and collective groups over individual actions might be one good path.
